Our new take-back program in the US and Canada facilitates a sustainable product life cycle, and contributes to sustainability goals in construction and architecture.

The Rockcycle end-of-life take-back program plays a crucial role in supporting Rockfon’s circular manufacturing process. 

Rockfon stone wool ceiling tiles and panels that are removed during building renovation or demolition can be returned to a US stone wool manufacturing facility. Then, by leveraging a truly unique benefit of stone wool — its ability to be endlessly recycled — we transform these end-of-life stone wool ceiling tiles into new stone wool products without any compromise to product quality or integrity. Through this process, Rockcycle not only reduces the overall waste going to landfills, but it also enables a truly closed-loop recycling system.

For Rockfon and our parent company, ROCKWOOL Group, sustainability is a central component of our business strategy. Since 2016, ROCKWOOL Group has used the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) framework to set our own company goals and to quantifiably measure our progress and achievements.

The Rockcycle program specifically addresses the UN SDG for responsible consumption and production. Rockcycle reclaims stone wool materials from renovation and demolition projects. The material is then recycled through our production process to make new ROCKWOOL products, including Rockfon stone wool ceiling tiles and panels. 

It’s now available in 21 countries and our aim is to reach 30 by 2030*. How it works is fairly simple. We take back stone wool material from construction, renovation and demolition sites and recycle it in our production process to make new ROCKWOOL products. 

Why is that important? Because the construction industry has a waste problem. Valuable materials are too often uncollected and misdirected to general waste, which ends up in landfill. In fact, only 20–30 percent of construction and demolition waste (CDW) is recovered at all, indicating the urgent need to tackle this problem.

Rockcycle® facilitates a truly circular and closed loop recycling system. It also caters to the increased demand by key stakeholders such as architects, specifiers, engineering and construction companies, public authorities and policymakers for sustainable ways to reduce construction and demolition waste.

As a circularity frontrunner in the construction industry, we are constantly pushing the boundaries of making our products, operations and supply chain more circular. We are keen to engage with ambitious players and regulators at all levels of government on how to best create conducive legislation and a level playing field for circular construction products.
